The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, is a play set on a remote island, supposedly Bermuda, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his rightful place as Duke using illusion and skilful manipulation. He conjures up a storm to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's low nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand. The strange character of the Island is personified and voiced by the primitive servant Caliban. Comic relief is supplied by the clowns Trinculo and Stephano.

Characters:

Prospero - The legitimate Duke of Milan, the play’s protagonist and father of Miranda, has spent twelve years on the island refining his magic powers.

Miranda - daughter of Prospero, 14, brought to the island at age 3 and has never seen any men other than her father and Caliban. Compassionate, generous, and loyal to her father.

Ariel - Prospero’s airy spirit helper, mischievous and ubiquitous, able to traverse the length of the island in an instant and to change shapes at will.

Caliban - A savage and deformed slave and another of Prospero’s servants, the son of deceased witch Sycorax, acquainted Prospero with the island when Prospero arrived.

Ferdinand - Son and heir of Alonso, love interest for Miranda.
Antonio - Prospero’s brother, who usurped Prospero’s position as Duke of Milan.

Alonso - King of Naples and father of Ferdinand, aided Antonio in unseating Prospero.

Gonzalo - An old, honest lord, helped Prospero and Miranda escape Milan.

Trinculo, a jester, and Stephano, a drunken butler, who engage in boasting and petty greed.

Boatswain - vigorously good-natured, appears in the first (storm and ship sinking) and last scenes.
