The Importance of Being Earnest

Bill Maxwell

Finally, 50 years after playing Merriman in High School, I get to be Lane, the other butler. It's a pleasure and a privilege to hear and speak Wilde's language and wit, and to be in this production.

Bill played Prof. Bhaer in the '92 production of Little Women, one of his favorite roles. Other favorites have been Dr. Gibbs in Our Town, Andy in Love Letters, the Duke in As You Like it. In other incarnations he has been producer, treasurer, vice-president and board member for the Players. He has had to a adopt a very different mindset to be the grandfather of a twenty-year-old.

Bill has been a Concord Players member since 1965. Among the many behind-the-scenes hats he has worn are those of producer, Treasurer, and Vice President of the Players. In 1983 he revived his role as Homer in Morning's at Seven for Concord's participation in the Dundalk (Ireland) international theatre festival, where he was nominated for best supporting actor.

In real life, Bill taught mathematics at the Fenn School for eleven years before he went into business for himself as a painting contractor. He loves being able to work outdoors and to keep his body moving. He also cherishis self-employment which allows him to plan the important things in life and schedule work and obligations around them.
